Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research & Research Training)
The Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research & Research Training) provides leadership in linking the quality and standards agenda across research and education, including strategies to enhance research and graduate education outcomes.
The portfolio's key roles are to:
- coordinate overall planning of research priorities and develop growth strategies, including development of the Institutes of Advanced Studies; recruitment and support of increased numbers of higher degree research (HDR) candidates and postgraduate coursework students; and competitive research funding strategies to maximise opportunities for the University and improve external grant performance
- develop quality and performance standards and initiatives that improve outcomes in sponsored research, research career development, HDR and postgraduate coursework education
- enhance HDR student development and academic opportunities, including innovative approaches to research training.

Professor Mandy Thomas is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Research Training) at ANU.
Professor Mandy Thomas has broad research and research training responsibilities which include Higher Degree Research, Research Integrity and Equity.
Professor Thomas is a member of both the University's Education and Research Committees, and works closely together with Pro Vice-Chancellor (E-Strategies) Professor Robin Stanton, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Learning, Teaching & Students) Professor Elizabeth Deane, and the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) Professor Lawrence Cram, in developing the University's strategic approach to Research and Education. She is also the Chair of the ANU Human Research Ethics Committee.
Mandy Thomas took up the position of Pro Vice-Chancellor at ANU in November 2006. Prior to this, she worked for the Australian Research Council as Executive Director, Humanities and Creative Arts and as the co-ordinator of the Discovery& Projects scheme. An anthropologist by training, she has published widely on political and social change in Vietnam, Asian cultural production, migration and regional cultural traffic.
