Academic Board

The Academic Board of the Australian National University was formally re-established by Council in February 2012 as a Committee of Council under the Australian National University Academic Board Statute. Academic Board is tasked with ensuring the University maintains the highest standards in teaching, scholarship and research.

Under the Australian National University Academic Board and Committees Rules, the University's Research, Education and Access and Equity Committees advise the Academic Board on matters within their remit.

Terms of reference

The functions and powers of the Board, as set out in the Australian National University Academic Board Statute (PDF, 30KB), include:

  • operating with the assistance of specialist committees: Education, Research, Equity and Access;
  • accrediting and reaccrediting programs and changes to existing programs;
  • ensuring the maintenance of the highest standards in teaching, scholarship and research within the University;
  • approving Degrees and other awards;
  • discussing and developing policy recommendations in relation to the University’s academic matters;
  • maintaining an effective overview of the academic activities of the University and advising and assisting in their coordination;
  • advising on the academic aspects and content of the University’s strategic plan;
  • providing a forum to facilitate information flow and debate within the University and between the senior executive officers of the University and the wider academic community;
  • reporting to the University Council at intervals, and in the manner specified by the University Council, on the performance of its functions.

    

Elections

The membership of Academic Board is currently being determined with elections of academic staff members being held within Colleges and an election of general staff members being run by the Governance Office.

Membership

The membership of the Academic Board is set out in section 6 of the Australian National University Academic Board Statute 2012.  The term of appointment for each elected or appointed member of the Board is two years.

    

Meetings & agendas

Academic Board will meet about six times a year.
